Working sheep again

Yesterday we went to work sheep again, all the girls needed to have their bellies and nether regions sheared in preparation for lambing in a few weeks, they also got vaccinated and had their hooves trimmed. We did between 25-30 sheep yesterday, it took around 3 hours. This time I did bring a working camera so I have some pictures, but Logan and I helped a lot more this time than last so I had less time for taking pictures. We had a great time and are both feeling more comfortable handling sheep. We think we want smaller sheep, these guys were huge!

I thought Logan was great yesterday, he helped the whole time and didn't get bored. He helped hold sheep, he passed supplies to everyone, he helped open and close the door as we finished with a sheep and released it, he basically did everything he could to help with no complaints. At one point he was carrying a bucket of feed and was being chased by the sheep, he was trying to put it away so they couldn't eat it all and he tripped and spilled a bunch of the feed. In the past, this would have led to a huge meltdown on his part but he just stood up, picked up what feed he could and proceeded to put the bucket away. After we finished with the sheep we went inside to eat lunch and he did great eating food he wasn't familiar with and participating in the conversation with 4 women. I was just so impressed with him!

Wait, that isn't a sheep?!

Ah, here's a sheep.

We worked the sheep in the greenhouse which was a great choice since it was cold and snowing!

Pet me Logan!

Hey, what are you doing to her?
We're out of here! Whoa sheep!

This is the way a good sheep should act.

What a great day...I don't think I knew you all were getting into sheep. I think I may have missed a post or two while moving. Logan did an awesome job! What a cutie. Have you heard of Soay sheep - they just sound so interesting to me...they have historical significance, are smaller, require little intervention, and are so unusual looking.

I just love donkeys - that's a great picture you took of that fuzzy little guy.

Logan is a champ. You must be so proud! Your sheep look gorgeous. Our college campus has a small farm, and the pregnant females have started to lamb. The students are all so excited--and I can't hardly blame them!

That sounds like such a fun field trip! I love when my little girls surprise me by behaving like I'd like them to. They're usually amazing. I don't know why it surprises me still ... ;).

What a great day for the two of you!

What kind of sheep do you think you'll get when you're ready?

Do you knit or spin?

Logan is a real "trooper"! Looks like he enjoyed himself. Guess he is really growing up.

I agree with Linda! Where did Logan go and who is that young man in the pictures!!! You guys must be sooo ready to get your own herd.

Man, I don't know about the sheep, but I'd love to have that hoop house!

I was down looking at cows in VA last weekend, and they had miniature donkeys who were sooo sweet.

What fun!

he sounds brave and smart! you've done a good job raising your son.

and how did you find this place, a place that lets you help with sheep shearing? I wonder if there's somewhere like that near me...

ps. I also like that I made it on your to-do list!

Farmgirl - I'm not sure I've mentioned it here much, but yeah we want sheep. We are leaning toward Shetlands but the Soay are really cool. I think I will wait to see what is available near us when we move.

Wendy - Yeah, Logan is usually great but he was extra great this time.

Twinville - We are thinking of Shetlands, we need smaller sheep if it will just be the 2 of us. I'm a small woman. I do knit and want to learn to spin but haven't yet.

Mom and Farmom - I hadn't realized how big Logan had gotten until I looked at those pictures. He is looking so grown up lately. It is really cool and a little sad, my baby is gone!

Danielle - The hoop house was amazing. I'll be helping her plant stuff in it soon. And the little donkey is so sweet. How goes the cow looking?

Erikka - It is the woman I get my eggs from. I just asked her if we could help with the sheep sometime. This is our second time helping with shearing. She was also an unschooler, her son is now in college, so we had a special connection. You are almost off my to do list! I have like 3 more rows and I'm done. They will be in the mail soon, sorry I'm taking so long!
