Garden update

This week's harvest. The zuccini are now shredded and in the freezer for future muffins and breads.
This is the main thing I'm growing in my garden. Anyone know what it is and can we eat it?
My peanuts have flowers.
The corn is getting tall.

The zuccini is scary big!
Baby butternut squash. Isn't it cute? I know it is wilted. It doesn't matter when or how much I water, in the middle of the day everything is wilted.
Potato flowers.

Another poll

We've come up with a name for the farm. It is always windy here which sucks in the winter but isn't bad in the summer. I've come up with a few logo options and thought we'd let you guys vote on it. Vote in the poll on the sidebar. And ignore the weird formatting of this post. It has been a trying day and I don't have the energy to make Blogger do what I want it to do.

Chicks

Just some cute chick pictures. They are in the awkward teenage stage, but getting pretty friendly. They love running around in the pasture looking for bugs.

They love to hang out on the goats. I need to have the camera with me at all times!

Introducing IO

We got a new goat this week. She got to come home just in time for the huge storm. We got her from the same woman we got Aurora and Orion from. She has had kids before and was exposed to a buck before we got her. Hopefully, she is pregnant. It will be a few months before we know.

She is very pretty and friendly. She is settling in really well. She and Aurora are already friends, I wonder if they remember each other, because Aurora still doesn't like Eris. IO is dominant over Orion and pushes him around. It is funny to watch because Orion was the big man around here.

Short update

Things have been crazy here! Wednesday night the house got hit by lightning. We lost power, internet, phone and satellite. We have power back, internet here and there, phone on some of the jacks, and no satellite yet. I've been going to the library to use the internet but all I manage to get done is stuff for my job before Logan is bored and my time is up. I have lots of pictures I want to post soon, but I can't get the pictures off the computer and onto the internet yet. We're still working on getting everything fixed. I hope to get some pictures up tonight.

Needless to say, I'm 5 days behind in blogs and will probably never catch up. Sorry if I don't get around to reading your posts. If something really big has happened let me know in the commments and I'll go check it out.

Scissor Beak Update

This will be my last Scissor Beak update. He died last night. I knew something was wrong as soon as I left the house. He always hears me coming and runs out to meet me in the yard. This morning, no Scissor Beak. I'm going to miss him running up to say hi everytime I go outside. He was full or spunk and personality. It is weird to be attached to a deformed meat bird, but I was.

Scissor Beak had a special bowl for his food that was deep, so he could scoop it. The other birds seemed to know it was his and they never bothered it. Scissor Beak loved for me to hold the bowl while he ate. I hate to say, I would spend about 10 minutes everyday holding the bowl for him. At least he was spoiled in his short life.

He'll be buried in the garden, we'll put Logan's prickly pear cactus on top of him.

Baby bird update

I took this picture of the birds on Friday. It is getting crowded in that nest!

I went to check on them Saturday and they were out of the next and spread about the run-in.

Momma bird was trying to bring them bugs but was having trouble finding them. They all grouped back up together Saturday and Sunday night. They spent all day Saturday and Sunday in the run-in learning to fly. One even landed on one of our chicks back! Of course, I didn't have the camera, but it sure was cute!
Today, they were all gone. I guess they learned to fly well enough to move on. We enjoyed having them around, especially once they started learning how to fly.

Embarrassing garden pictures

I thought I'd do a garden update. Some of the following pictures are embarrassing, please ignore them ;).

Overview of the garden. Please ignore the goat butt, I do NOT let my goat run around lose after milking.
The weeds are totally out of control! They are taller than the corn. This is so embarrassing.

I bought a hoe after much argument with hubby about it. Here is part of it hoed. It is hard, slow work, but I'm making progress. I've got about twice this amount done so far. I'd be further along, but hubby got hurt over the weekend and we laid grass seed that needs to get covered with dirt. So, I've been spending every evening this week spreading dirt instead of hoeing the garden. And it is too hot during the day to do anything outside. We are getting into the 90s during the day.

The potatoes are doing well though. As are the sweet potatoes. I've got them both growing in potato bags.

The tomatoes are also doing well. They all have baby tomatoes and lots of flowers. I also have lots of ladybugs on my tomatoes. I don't know if that is good or bad.

Please don't look at the following picture! Mom wanted an update on the garlic bed she helped me plant in November. I'm ashamed to say it has become a weed bed. They seemed to grow overnight! And now I have no idea if there is any garlic even in there anymore.

Baby birds

I left this bowl in the run-in and a little bird built a nest in it. She laid 6 eggs.
They all hatched, but 1 didn't make it, so she has 5 babies. Here they are at a day or 2 old.

This video is when they are about a week old. Scissor Beak jumped up and scared them at the end.

They are completely feathered now. I didn't check them today to see if their eyes are open yet. I'll go out in a bit and try to get more pictures. Momma bird takes good care of them. I see her bringing them bugs all the time.

Cheese and guineas

While my sister was visiting we made goat cheese. It was a simple vinegar cheese but we added tarragon and sage from the garden. It was really good, although a bit crumbly. I have enough milk in the freezer for another batch of cheese. What should I make? We've made ice cream 3 times now, it sure it good. Having a milk goat is pretty cool.

We got some guinea keets today. I've been looking for them for months on Craigslist. I didn't want to order them since most places have a 25 minimum on keets. I finally found some and met a nice woman. Aren't they pretty?

The chicks are chasing me!

Sorry for all the videos lately, I'll post more pictures tomorrow.
