Pantry pictures

Mark made some shelves for my food storage room and I've been able to get everything organized. I love it! It really appeals to the side of me that likes organization.

Here is one set of shelves where we keep our main staples.

This bookcase has been converted to our can storage.

The little bookcase is our empty jar storage.

Here is the other set of shelves on the other side of the room. It has our baking goods and other assorted food stuff.

As you can see we only have 5 gallons of water stored so far. I need to make that my next priority.
In other news, all the chickens are fine. No more signs of the hawks. And next week is meat bird processing week. I looked around a little to see if I could find anyone to do it for me, but no luck. I'm not really looking forward to it, but I know I can do it.

Looks good! Seems you do at least one same thing we do here... buy two sets of the same drinking glasses at a time and store one to replace broken ones from.

Christy, your food storage room is wonderful! You've done a great job...but I hope you don't get a mouse. I had one get in mine, and he nibbled the corners off each and every bag of beans, noodles, rice, etc. Now I have to put everything in jars.

Excellent Job! Looks Great! I recently started putting all dry goods into jars also. I also save any large plastic containers for food items. An example is the large container the animal crackers come in from Sam's Club. I know someone who uses 2 liter bottles to store rice and such.

You have been busy! This looks great!

Like the people above, you may consider glass storage if this going long term. Not only does it keep the mice out, it also help avoid weevils and moths.

oh, I just love seeing all that food storage. I don't have that much space available presently but working towards it.

An organized pantry is the best!

I love your new food storage area. The shelves are awesome. I agree with the other comments about keeping items in glass or plastic containers to keep "critters" out. I have a large metal tin (carmel corn came in it) if you would like it . I can bring it when we come down. Good luck with the meat bird processing!

Good for you on the storage and the organization of it!

I love to store water in empty 2 liter soda pop bottles. The bottles don't biodegrade like milk bottles do. At our wal-mart they are selling big blue water barrels. I don't know if they have those in GA, but that would be a great way to save it too.

I only wish I were that organized! As for the bird processing I hope you show us a step-by-step. I used to do our rabbits when we had them. I actually learned from a book so I have no doubt you can do it.

The food storage is totally awesome Christy!

As for butchering chickens. They are not so hard to do. But don't do like I've done and torture the poor things before they are finally decapitated!

I finally learned a trick. I put two nails in a stump or bock just wide enough apart for the neck to go through, but close enough that it 'catches' on the head when I pull the neck out a bit so I can use the hatchet. This way it is very hard to miss. I also hold the wings with one hand right under the armpit holding the wings together. This helps keep the wings from flapping and bruising the meat. If they are very big birds though, that could be hard to do.

But then again, you may have more modern ways to kill your birds than with a block and hatchet!

At any rate - good luck!

Good advice on the jars. Should I put just the rice and flour into jars, or everything?

Very nice storage area, Christy. I'd love to have that much space for storage. Have fun filling up all those shelves. :)
