Shiny snow

Sunday night we got about 4 inches of snow, then Monday we got freezing rain. This created an ice layer on top of the snow. It is very slippery and a bear walking out to the goats 3 times a day carrying 2 buckets of warm water. It is however very beautiful! It is shiny and smooth.

Nothing has been open for 3 days. I'm hoping we can get back to normal activities tomorrow. I'm going a little stir crazy. On the upside, Logan got to go hilly billy sledding yesterday. The neighbors pulled him around on an inner tube attached to their ATV. They also sledded on a dumpster lid. Logan has a real sled and the neighbors were very impressed by it!

Luckily, we've kept power so it's been nice and warm in the house. It's been highs of 27 or 28 and windy for the last few days. Not pleasant for anything living. The goats are miserable and I feel so bad for them.

For those that live where it snows a lot, what do you give the goats to eat in the winter? They really miss their grass, they are used to being able to eat it all the time. I've been giving them hay twice a day and their normal grain ration at night. Does this seem like enough? It looks like this snow will be around for at least another week.

I personally have hay available 24/7 for them in the winter and then their grain rations. There is a website of a woman who sprouts her grain for her goats, a bit time time consuming, but very good for them.

Ooooh, those pictures are amazing. It looks like your back yard has become one giant ice rink, with a few trees thrown in as obstacles to skate around. :-)
Stay warm.
In our cold that we've been having, I've given my goat boys free-choice hay, a lot of carrots as treats, but absolutey zero grain... I worry so about urinary blockages, you know?

Your snow pictures are fabulous - so pretty. But not pretty to have to deal with I'm sure. How are the chickens doing? I bet they are just as unhappy as the goats.

You have hay out all the time? I'm not even sure how I'd do that without them climbing in it and making it inedible. They are so picky about their hay. But I will put hay out more often than twice a day for them. Mine don't really like carrots, maybe I'll try baby carrots.

Well... last January you have quite a list of things on the table (goals), and my curiosity is about to bust a seam to know how those goals went! Most especially:
"Figure out my overall focus for the farm (this will be a future post)".
Did I miss that post? Could you do a farm update?
I haven't got anything but land so far (and it's not prime farm land of any sort, that goats are probably all that's suitable for it!) but I'm learning so much and am so inspired by your experiences I'm afraid I may be romanticizing the farm life.
Thanks so much for sharing your journey.

I remember a time many years ago when we had snow like this in VT. My friend and I decided to slide down a big hill on the seat of our pants...big mistake..no way to slow down..all we could do was avoid the trees. We hit a small bump near the bottom..it launched us just enough so that when we landed we broke thru the crust and stopped. Never did that again.
