Flu pandemic possibility

There is an swine flu epidemic in Mexico right now. It is a new strain that seems to be pretty virulent. I don't usually post prepper stuff on my blog because I know a lot of people aren't into it. But I'd suggest going to the store and getting a few weeks worth of supplies if you don't already have them. If this spreads to the US, you may be home for a few weeks trying to avoid it. I'm going to the store today to get more stuff.

I had no idea, but just did some reading on it. I'm a long ways from Mexico, but I suppose a tourist could carry it this way. Scary stuff.

I'm stocked and ready, save that I have to go to work and I'm military which is always scary! Since I have an "over-active" immune system the usually stands me well, I'm smack dab in the danger zone..argh!

yeah, it's scary. What are you stocking up on?

Yes, panic will have the shelves empty soon.

Hello, While I have kept my concern low key, I am worried. Last time I had the flu it almost killed me. I am stocked and staying home for a week as I am on vacation. I am an obessive hand washer and will be even more so now. I also never touch my face. I sneeze and cough into my elbow joint and wish more people would do so. This really concerns me but, will keep my concern as low key as possible. Good Luck everyone and keep those hands washed.

I love the idea of being able to stay home and avoid it....but hubby still has to go out there and work.....and then he'll be the one bringing stuff home.

I think we just have to live our lives while taking proper precautions (not coming into close contact with strangers, not sharing utensils, not eating at restaurants/food bars, being sure to wash hands often, use germ killers, even masks if going into public places, etc

Lisa - I'm not saying we should stay home now, but if it does spread in the US, the government could declare a state of emergency and require people to stay home. They've already done that in Mexico. If you were ordered to stay home for 3 weeks, are you prepared? Many people aren't. I plan to live my life until/if things get bad. But I'm prepared in case they do get bad.

Joanna - Mostly food so that if we have to we can survive without having to leave. We also have latex gloves and masks should we have to get in contact with others if the case of a true pandemic.

For anyone that doubts how bad things could be, read about the Spanish flu in the 1900s. People went to parties healthy and were dead the next morning. This was young, healthy people, not the old and sick. A true flu pandemic could be very, very bad.

I am all with you on this one, Christy! I've started a short while ago to stock pile but am not anyway near where I want to be or need it to be. So I am off to the store tomorrow as well to buy some fill ins. If we won't have to make use of it, fine..but if, then we are ready.

Always good to be prepared, "prepper" or not. I stocked up on beer.

Just kidding. :) It is looking pretty serious.

My stocks are already fairly decent, but stopped by a couple of stores today for some odds and ends and noticed both places were out of masks. I'm glad we have those and gloves already, but I was going to send some to YoungSon who lives elsewhere. Oh well. I figure since he's my kid he probably has them ;)

As far as spouse, Husband is a LEO so I do worry a lot about that, but maybe as a detective it'll be a bit better than street? I hope.

I have quite a few things already, because I buy in bulk and freeze what we won't need right away.

It makes me glad that I am able to produce some of our families staples here at home... I have a steady supply of eggs, my lettuce is doing very well and there will be many more fresh fruits and veggies soon, I have 2 50 pound bags of wheat that I grind to make bread, we will have honey in the near future... and if we HAD to we could eat some of the chickens we raise, but only as a very LAST resort.

So, all in all, I guess I feel prepared for whatever happens.

Beer! Ron cracks me up! He knows life's necessities! Still, regardless of emergencies, it is a good idea to have some stuff on hand!

Hey there, I'm a prepper and have a lot of the bases covered, but I did get disposible items that we don't regularly get: tissues, disinfectant wipes.

I doubt they'd require my hubby to stay home, unfortunately. In fact they'd probably require him to STAY at work for whatever amount of time they had decided upon.

He works for the State in Juvenile Detention. Unless the state just releases those youth offenders out on the street, they'll need people, like my husband to be there to keep the peace.

But either way, we'd be ready for whatever is thrown our direction. What not many people realize is that the Swine Flu is treatable and millions of doses of vax and meds are available in the US.
