Ice cream

Aurora has been giving us more milk and Orion is down to 2 bottles a day, so we've been getting milk for us! It is honestly the best milk I've ever had. It has no milk after taste, it just tastes clean. I'm amazed, I really didn't expect the milk to be that much better. Every time I have a glass of milk it is a revelation!

Since we had extra milk, we made ice cream! It was so cool. I've never made ice cream before. I got this little ice cream maker for $20 and it worked great.
Here is our finished product. I guess I don't have to tell you how amazing this ice cream was. It was to die for!

I'm going to do a post soon about milking. I've settled into the routine and don't mind it too much. I still wouldn't say I enjoy it, but I don't mind it. It is annoying being stuck on such a strict schedule, but I'm adjusting to that too. I adore the goats and that alone makes it all worth it. They are such fun animals! I didn't think I'd be a goat person, but I am. The sheep I'm not so sure about yet...

Tasty! What flavor you make?

I have to admit too, sheep are challenging. I figured if they end up not working out, a simple ad on Craigslist will get them out of our hair. I think once we have the sheep pasture thing figured out, we'll be okay.

Mmmm! I adore homemade Ie Cream. I bought the attachment for my KitchenAid mixer last year and it makes such delicious rich ice cream. I also bought the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream book crammed full of their amazing recipes. Yummo!!

How does huby and Logan like the Goats Milk? I'm going to be learning from you, as I had wanted to breed my mini mancha goat for a Spring freshening, but as you know, that didn't work out. I'm going to plan for next year, though.
I'm not a very strict scheduled person either, so I hope I'll be able to fall into a fairly easy routine.

I look forward to reading more about your goat milking experiences, tips, advice, etc.

Do you think you will try milking your sheep one day, too?

Jennifer - It is vanilla, which is our favorite flavor.

Lisa - Logan loves the milk, Mark doesn't like milk at all and is so freaked out about the idea of the milk coming from our animal, he won't even try the ice cream. His loss, he's weird. I don't know about milking sheep, I can't see them cooperating on the stand nearly as well as a goat. Sheep just don't seem as easily trained to me, maybe I'm wrong.

I think the whole milking thing would be a cool experience, but I am so not a schedule person. We'd never make it. I'm glad it is working out for you. The icecream looks great.

are you pasterizing the goats milk? Mike loves drinking it raw, so I didn't bother with cooking it. I brought goats milk to the office and EVERYBODY expected it to have a gamey taste and yet EVERYBODY loved it. absolutely delicious. One coworker swears it clears up his migrains. Mike and I are just inlove with our goats, just plum silly about 'em.

I miss homemade ice cream. Maybe next year after my nannies kid. Enjoy it for me! =)

Joanna - I don't pasteurize the milk we drink. If it is for Orion I pasteurize it. Logan tried the pasteurized milk once and it had clumps, I guess I don't do it very well. Orion doesn't care but I decided we'd drink ours raw.

Gayle - I'm not much of a schedule person either! Makes this twice a day thing hard. And you have to be on time.

I can taste it!

With Logan taming all these goats, you can open a petting zoo soon and call it "Petagoat Junction".

Gail - you are too funny! How are you so clever? I love it.

That's great. I've heard folks either like goats milk or can't stand it.
I hope the milking becomes more enjoyable. Meditation time perhaps?
