Introducing IO

We got a new goat this week. She got to come home just in time for the huge storm. We got her from the same woman we got Aurora and Orion from. She has had kids before and was exposed to a buck before we got her. Hopefully, she is pregnant. It will be a few months before we know.

She is very pretty and friendly. She is settling in really well. She and Aurora are already friends, I wonder if they remember each other, because Aurora still doesn't like Eris. IO is dominant over Orion and pushes him around. It is funny to watch because Orion was the big man around here.

IO is beautiful! She looks very snazzy in the fancy collar too! Lucky girl to come to live with Orion and the crew! She's got it made!

I love all names you have for your animals...was this goat already named or did you name her IO? What does it stand for? anything in particular?

All our mammals are named after things in space. IO is one of Jupiter's moons. Turns out most stuff in space is named after mythology, so all our animals also have a mythology background.

Claire, Logan picked out the fancy collar. Eris has a matching one in pink. I like to think they are lucky to live here. I do spoil them a bit.

We just got another one too, ours hasn't been exposed though, so we need to get a little Nigerian Buck to go with them I guess...

Congrats on IO. She is lovely. I hope she's 'with kid' like you are hoping.
You're gonna be up to your hair follicles in milk in the coming months. I hope you'll let us all know what you plan to do with it all. Drinking? Goat's Milk soap? Cheese?
I wish I lived closer as I'd buy some from you (for pet useage, of course *snicker*......darn government.)
:~D

Looking at yours and my goats they seem so small compared to the goats I saw at the show this weekend. Those Lamancha gals were BIG. Huge utters and teats.

I have a friend who has a variety of Nigerians and large does and she says she doesn't bother with milking the Nigerians. I enjoy getting milk out of my little girls though.

Does your milker ever get stopped up? Sometimes I have to soak it for a while and keep working with it before it will take suction again.

Joanna - I know a lot of people who gave up milking ND because you get so little milk from them. So far, it is enough for us though. We don't drink a lot of milk and I've got over a gallon frozen right now.

Yeah, my milker stops up sometimes. It has only happened seriously twice. I soaked it over night in a vinegar/water solution and was able to get it working the next day. It is usually hairs that get in there.

Jimmy - maybe....

Lisa - so far we are drinking most of it. I've made ice cream 3 times, pudding twice and cheese once. I do have enough in the freezer to make cheese again, so that will be soon. I may try a hard cheese just for fun.
