Small Garden update

Thai hot peppers are beginning to form.

Blackberries! We are getting 4 or 5 ripe a day that all get eaten straight off the bush. Clearly when we move we will need to put in many blackberry bushes to get enough to make anything.
My pumpkin is getting oranger. There are a number of smaller ones on the plant also.
This Amish paste tomato plant has 12 tomatoes on it! This is good for me.
The sweet potato plant is out of hand! It is overflowing the pot!

My first amish paste tomato harvest. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them yet.

My cucumber harvest so far. Now I just need to find out how to make pickles.

Wow! Lucky girl! I wish I had cukes and tomatoes already!! Everything looks really good. And that potato plant, it's going to keep growing! They're vines and love to stretch out. Congrats on the yummy harvest!

I have an awesome pickle recipe I could send you if you'd like. Or I could just leave it in the comments if you'd rather.

Ann, I'd love your pickle recipe, you can send it to me or post it here, whatever is easier. I guess I should probably make the pickles before too long, I'm not sure how long the cukes will be good. I'm so new to most of this.

Everything looks great! My few sweet potatoes that survived don't look anywhere near that good. This heat and drought is killing us. Our potato harvest is about a quarter of what it was last year. Our pastures are dry and crunchy—it's just heartbreaking. I get depressed every time I go out. We're now irrigating in earnest—hopefully it won't be too little, too late.

Looking forward to seeing you guys next week!

Danielle,

That is so tough about the lack of rain. I've been lucky that all my plants are in containers and are on the deck right next to my rain barrels. I've had to water some of the plants twice a day for weeks now and a few times my rain barrels have been almost empty. Luckily, we've gotten short storms that fill them back off each time, so I haven't gotten totally empty. Catching most of the run off from the roof helps with that. This summer has been brutal so far though!

This is my great-aunt's freezer pickle recipe. We have never frozen them because we end up eating them pretty fast. We've kept them in a tall jar in the fridge for up to a month.

2 cups thinly sliced cucumbers
1 1/2 cup sugar (I have cut this back to 1 cup)
1 cup vinegar
1 cup thinly sliced red onion
1 cup thinly sliced red pepper
1 t celery salt
1 t salt
mix all together in a bowl
let stand on counter for a couple of hours, stirring every now and then until juices have released and all the cukes are covered with liquid.
At this point I put them in a jar in the fridge. We enjoy them on the side with most meals.
ENJOY!!

Ann, thank you so much for the recipe! I can't wait to try it. I may have a problem getting 7 cups from my garden though, I guess I will buy some extras at the farm market.
